CROTEC – Structural Analysis of On-going and Neotectonic Activity in Croatia

External project funded by The Ministry of Science, Education and Sports, Republic of Croatia

Investigators: dr. Bruno Tomljenović

Brief description (details available by contacting dr. Bruno Tomljenović)

NW Croatia and the Croatian Adriatic region belong to seismically and tectonically active regions of the northeastern circum-Mediterranean belt. Since both regions have a great social, cultural and economic importance, the highest level of seismic risk is invoked. The main objective of CROTEC is quantitative structural analysis of active tectonics and seismicity and neotectonics of both regions.

Aims and objectives:The main objective of CROTEC is quantitative structural analysis of neotectonics and seismicity in Croatia. CROTEC project is aimed to testify hypothesis which supposes that on-going seismic activity in NW Croatia and in the Croatian Adriatic region is mostly related to fault zones and/or faults that can be traced at the surface and/or subsurface, and which are: A) inherited from previous neotectonic deformational phases (commenced since ca. 40 Ma), and B) formed during the youngest Pliocene-Holocene deformational phase (commenced since ca. 5 Ma) due to overall transpression in this part of the Mediterranean. In order to test this hypothesis CROTEC research strategy includes a systematic integration and synthesis of relevant available (published and unpublished) and newly obtained geological and geophysical data into a GIS project database, construction of neotectonic and seismotectonic maps of the NW Croatia and the Croatian Adriatic region, all aimed at quantitative assessment of seismotectonic and neotectonic movements in both regions.

Methodologies/experiments:

  • Integration of available and newly obtained geological and geophysical data sets into the project database (GIS-ArcView platform) that will help in reconstruction of neotectonic history and on-going seismotectonic activity in Croatia:
  • Digitalization, georeferencing & archiving of available data sets in geology, tectonics, seismicity and geodesy and archiving of new data colleced by the Project into GIS. This is necessary for construction and maintenance of the Project data base (GIS - ArcView) that is aimed to provide a fast-and-easy approach, exchange and multi-disciplinary analysis of relevant data sets amongst the project researchers.
  • Structural analysis of faults and related deformational structures on outcrops and on seismic reflection profiles. This is aimed to collect new data sets on arrangement, morphology and kinematics of faults and fault related structures for the purpose of construction of neotectonic and seismotectonic maps of NW Croatia and the Croatian Adriatic region.
  • Analysis of seismicity, earthquake focal mechanisms and principal stress directions derived by geophysical methods and microtectonic measurements. This is aimed to identify and characterize the major seismic active zones in NW Croatia and in Croatian Adriatic region.

Work plan:

  • Design and construction of the Project database (GIS - ArcView) with georeferenced available geological, geophysical and geodetic data sets;
  • Remote sensing analysis of NW Croatia and construction of lineament/fault map of this area;
  • Collection and achieving of new outcrop and subsurface data on arrangement, morphology and kinematics of faults and related deformational structures in the area of NW Croatia;
  • Construction of structural maps of NW Croatia in selective time windows;
  • Earthquake data analysis, calculation of focal mechanisms and principal stress directions;
  • Construction of seimotectonic map of NW Croatia and Croatian Adriatic region;
  • Presentation and publication and of Project results and achievements on meetings and in journals.

Deliverables and/or milestones: The main deliverable is construction of a GIS background for a future geoscience research activities in Croatia, in urban and infrastructural planning (e.g. highway, water supply, pipeline construction) for prevention and/or minimization of seismic risks and hazards in Croatia.
